Introduction[]
While the Stormwind Constabulary enforces the law among civilians, the Provost Service of the Stormwind Army upholds the law within its own ranks. Work in the Provost Service is undoubtedly thankless, yet it is crucial for maintaining the strict discipline and standards of the Stormwind Army and the First Regiment. Due to the high mobility required in the duties of the Provost Service, individual Provosts often receive training in horsemanship.
History[]
Initially, it was the responsibility of individual officers, and NCOs to maintain order within their units. However, this changed following the formation of the Defias Brotherhood after the Stonemason Riots. Reports of Defias sympathizers, saboteurs, and desertions—especially in Westfall—soared, overwhelming officers and NCOs. It was decided that a Provost Service would be established, primarily tasked with rooting out Defias spies and apprehending deserters.
At first, the Provost Service operated independently, with the Provost Marshal overseeing law and order across all regiments in the Stormwind Army. Following the presumed fall of the Defias Brotherhood, the Provost Service was disbanded, and its responsibilities reverted to the officers and NCOs of each unit.
The Provost Service would not reemerge until the events of the Cataclysm, during which the army became inundated with internal threats stemming from the brief resurgence of the Defias Brotherhood. To enhance the efficiency of the Provost Service, each unit of the army was assigned the task of creating and maintaining its own Provosts.
The First Regiment was no exception; being one of the most decorated and elite units in the Stormwind Military, the Provosts of the First are among the best in the army.
Duties and Responsibilities[]
- Provosts are required to maintain law and order on all military property; additionally, they are responsible for the security of all Stormwind Military property, ensuring that no trespassers enter and put soldiers at risk. This responsibility includes any camps or bases established for deployments.
- NOTE: Provosts may ONLY enforce Stormwind Law on First Regiment personnel while on deployment. All other matters should be referred to Camp Security.
- Provosts MUST be certified Constables.
- Although primarily responsible for military law enforcement, Provosts may be called to serve as standard constables during extreme emergencies.
- They must have a basic understanding of Military Law and its differences from Civil Law.
- Provosts are required to know basic firefighting skills, as they are responsible for extinguishing any fires that occur on military property or in camps during deployments.
- They are responsible for any prisoners taken and held by The First Regiment that fall under military jurisdiction (e.g., Horde Prisoners, Enemy Combatants). All prisoners must be treated in accordance with the Prisoners of War Act.
- While not directly responsible for the operations of the Penal Legion, Provosts oversee members of the Penal Legion when they are not assigned any duties.
- Provosts are expected to provide security for any Commissioned Officer lacking a security force, such as the Grand Marshals Ducal Guard.
- They will also be expected to protect high-risk military convoys.
- As soldiers, Provosts can be called into front-line combat at any time.
Structure[]
Similar to standard Constabulary units, Provosts report to the Lord High Constable in the Stormwind House of Nobles.
Provost Sergeant Addressed by “Provost Sergeant” or military rank
The Provost Sergeant is a position assigned to a non-commissioned officer (NCO) responsible for all Provost operations within the Provost Service of the First Regiment. Reporting solely to the deputy chief or the Chief Constable, it is the Provost Sergeant's responsibility to ensure that the Provosts perform their duties efficiently. The Provost Sergeant has the authority to certify new Provosts and to remove Provosts from their positions. This role ranks above the Senior Constables and below the Deputy Chief Constable in the overall structure of the Constabulary Division.
Senior Provost Addressed by “Senior Provost” or by military rank
Similar to Senior Constables, Senior Provosts are the officers overseeing Provosts and responsible for training aspiring Provosts. They are also tasked with conducting military investigations. Senior Provosts are expected to have horsemanship training and may perform mounted patrols. They hold positions equivalent to Senior Constables and are granted all relevant privileges, including the authority to suspend Constables, Provosts, and those of lower rank.
Provost Addressed by “Provost” or military rank
Standard Provosts constitute the vast majority of all members within the Provost Service. They are responsible for ensuring that personnel consistently abide by Stormwind Law. The Provosts form one of the primary lines of defense within our own ranks, safeguarding against the spread of corruption and disorder in the Army. Although not mandatory, Provosts are encouraged to learn horsemanship to enhance their ability to perform their duties. Provosts hold the same position as Constables and are granted all pertinent privileges.
How to Join[]
To join the Provost Service, one must achieve the rank of Corporal or higher, be a certified Deputy Constable within the Constabulary Corps, and maintain good standing with the Kingdom. Any individual meeting these requirements may consult with a Senior Provost or the Provost Sergeant to initiate their certification process. Aspiring Provosts will attend classes on military law, firefighting, military installation security, and the handling of prisoners of war. They will also complete a refresher course on civil and magical law. After finishing all these classes, candidates will take a certification exam. Those who pass will be awarded the title of Provost.
